Our distracted driving (texting) simulator got a write up in a local paper! We developed this application in coordination with Texas A&M and State Farm Insurance. We wanted to create a memorable experience that leaves users with questions and answers about how much time it really takes to answer a simple text message. It works like this, users sit in the rig and put on the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality (VR) Headset. Tracking cameras and a TV are mounted at fixed points for easy and consistent transportation and set up. Once the users are ready to go they follow on screen instructions to start driving. After they get comfortable their right hand controller starts to vibrate, indicating that they have a text message they need to respond too. They answer the messages by playing a quick game of Simon Says (just pressing up, down, left, or right) on the D-Pad or Analog Control Stick. We track their field of vision, and anytime they look down at their phone to interact there is a small chance that something happens in front of them. Like a car brake checking them, or a car pulling out in front of them. Almost always causing a very satisfying jump scare!
